CardGames Vol 1 Issue 5

Unbelievably, this is the penultimate issue of Card Games.

If you haven’t heard of CardGames or seen my previous reviews, it is a monthly release of a new trick. It’s not subscription based (although they did sell a limited number of subscriptions), and each release only has 100 copies. So, when you buy it, you know you're getting something unique that only a select few have. Vol 1 Issue 1 was their take on an ACAAN, Vol 1 Issue 2 was their one card version of a Mind Power Deck, Vol 1 Issue 3 was a prediction of a thought of card, Vol 1 Issue 4 was a decision making device that lives in your wallet and is always under your control, and here is their description of Vol 1 Issue 5

Issue 5 offers our devastating multi-phase, real world tested version of the famous Ten Card Poker Deal - giving you the ability to offer conclusive proof that you are in total control. Perfect for everyone, this simple game always ends with an impossible surprise.

This is an incredible three phase routine that allows you to demonstrate your mastery over the game of poker and your opponent.

You will receive a brand new and specially designed poker set that silently assists you in more ways than one and does almost all of the work for you, whilst also offering the perfect context for any Ten Card Poker Deal.

Alongside this, you will also receive a beautifully produced booklet that outlines the script and context that all help make this issue a truly fun and special experience.

We carry this with us always and we believe you will too.”

This is a departure from the one or two cards usually included in a Card Games release, as this one includes 12 cards and a sleeve to keep them in. They have been designed to look like a pocket version of poker. The cards are also cleverly marked. Admittedly, the marking is quite small, so if you have vision issues, you may need to skip the first phase.

Funny enough, this release is almost like a combination of everything that came before it, because in addition to the 10 cards you use to play the game, you also get a poker hand ranking card and a decisionmaking card, both of which are designed to look like part of the set.

The routine they teach is a three phase 10 card poker deal routine, but you can use this set for any 10 card poker deal that you like. In their routine, you begin by showing that you can read poker tells. Then they create a poker hand for the performer and themselves with a mix of luck and decision making; the performer’s hand always wins. Finally, the spectator deals two hands and lets fate decide which is his and which is the performer’s. Still, the performer’s hand wins.

It’s a pretty different approach to the classic 10 card poker deal that builds nicely and utilizes the decision making card in a fun and deceptive way. The price for what you get is a little high, but I always try to refrain from commenting on prices of releases because it's ultimately the artists' decision and I have been on both sides of the table and understand that the price is often reflective of the work that has gone into it, and the price often serves as a buffer to prevent it from being something someone buys and immediately exposes.

I’ll be using it for sure.
